Overview
Located in the southeastern corner of Gazimağusa, St. Nicholas Church is one of the three remaining Byzantine churches in the area. This small, double-aisled structure has suffered various damages throughout history, but parts of it have survived to this day and are open to visitors.
The church features two striking domes, visible from the top of the piers. Just below the window of the dome, there is a noticeable groove that once showed the path of a fallen object (perhaps a chandelier or a church bell).
On the wall, three small holes are arranged in a triangular formation. Behind these holes, there are voids made with clay pots, a technique used to reduce the static load of the structure, making it more stable and reliable.
It is also believed that these pots improve the acoustics, allowing the church to be filled with a sound that resembles a melody from heaven. Try listening to a nearby hymn and discover the unique sound created by this special atmosphere!
