Overview
When the Venetians took control of Famagusta in 1489, they promptly set out to fortify the city’s defenses. One of the first projects was the Sea Gate, or Porta del Mare, completed in 1496 by Niccolo Prioli. Positioned strategically at an angle, the gate served to protect the entrance to the walled city from the Port of Famagusta and was designed to be the first sight mariners would see as they approached.
The most captivating part of the Sea Gate, however, lies on the port side within the customs area, making it largely inaccessible to the public. For those seeking a view, the nearby Othello Tower offers a vantage point to glimpse the structure.
Above the gate stands an imposing marble sculpture of the winged lion of St. Mark, the patron saint of Venice. The lion, a powerful symbol of Venetian influence, holds an open book in its paw, inscribed in Latin with, “Peace to you Mark, my evangelist.” This sculpture is thought to be crafted from marble sourced from Salamis. The wooden gate and portcullis, added later, date back to Ottoman times, further highlighting the historical layering of Famagusta’s architecture.
On the land side of the Sea Gate, to the right, a large lion statue catches attention. According to local legend, one night the lion’s mouth will open; whoever witnesses this moment and places their hand in the lion’s mouth is said to gain immense fortune.
Currently, the Sea Gate is undergoing restoration, preserving this significant piece of Famagusta’s Venetian heritage for future generations.

It is a great place to shop not too far from New York. We took the bus from Port Authority and traveled through the countryside to get there.
