Overview
Othello’s Tower, originally built as a moated citadel in the 14th century, was constructed by the Lusignans to defend Famagusta’s harbor. Initially named the Harbour Citadel, it served as the main entrance to the town. The structure featured a central courtyard and square towers at each corner, housing royal family members and servants.

After the Venetians took control of Cyprus, they modified the tower, strengthening its defenses and turning it into a military stronghold. They repla
ced the square towers with round ones to withstand artillery attacks. The tower was integrated into the city walls, providing protection for the harbor. In 1492, the marble Lion of St. Mark was added abo
ve the entrance, symbolizing Venice’s power over both land and sea.
Visitors to Othello’s Tower can explore its well-preserved courtyard, where antique cannons and cannonballs hint at the tower’s turbulent past. The Great Hall, used as a dining room by the Lusignans, still showcases wooden pegs where tapestries once hung. The ribbed vaulted chambers, built between 1300 and 1310, were used as dormitories and a refectory.
Steps from the courtyard lead to the battlements, offering sweeping views of the harbor. The artillery chambers and towers reveal how soldiers navigated the fortress during wartime. Local legends claim Venetian merchants hid treasures in the tunnels during the Ottoman siege, treasures that remain concealed today.
Othello’s Tower is famously linked to Shakespeare’s play Othello, which is set in a harbor town in Cyprus. Restored and reopened in 2015, the tower offers not only historical intrigue but also stunning views and
occasional events in its courtyard. Its blend of Venetian and Lusignan architecture makes it a must-see
for visitors to Famagusta.
